RETIRED Presbyterian Minister Rev Joy Abdul-Mohan says that senseless acts of violence continue against women and girls in Trinidad and Tobago.
She called for inclusion and the investment in women to increase progress.
Abdul-Mohan was speaking on Tuesday at the Trinidad and Tobago Association of Retired Persons – Purple Diamond, San Fernando – celebration of International Women’s Day (IWD) and the Lenten/Easter Season at the Pleasantville Community Centre.
She noted the theme of IWD 2024 “Inspire Inclusion & “Invest in Women, Accelerate Progress” saying, “it saddens me that the world continues to mark this annual event and holy season against the backdrop of brutal violence against women and girls.”
Abdul-Mohan said, “These senseless acts of cruelty continue to plague our beautiful twin island of Trinidad and Tobago and play havoc in the lives of our families and communities.
“The situation demands that we inspire inclusion and invest in women and girls to accelerate progress.
“We are called to challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden our perceptions, create, change and enforce legislation to protect women and girls and to make interventions to improve relationships.
“In doing so, we celebrate women’s achievements; raise awareness against bias; take action towards equality and create a safe and violent-free environment for all women and all of humanity.
“Therefore, we celebrate also, the support of men who love and respect women as equal partners in the development of our nation and the progress made in different disciplines as we all make every effort to forge a gender-equal world; to be the best versions of ourselves and to bloom where are planted.”
The Vice President of Rapidfire Kidz Foundation said IWD and the Easter Season were opportunities to celebrate the courage and determination of ordinary women who played extraordinary roles in the history.
Abdul-Mohan also called for the recognition of the sacrificial love of Christ and an honest admission that there was much more work to do.
She said, “Thus, we need to re-commit our service to God and humanity.”
