IN just over two weeks Trinidad and Tobago records five Covid-19 deaths.
This according to Minister of Health Terrence Deyalsingh at the Divali Nagar which was transformed into a mass vaccination site by the North Central Regional Health Authority (NCRHA) for influenza on Monday.
He said, “We had two reported from December 28 to December 31, and for January 2024 we have had three, so we have had five Covid deaths from December 28, 2023, to today, January 15, 2024.”
Deyalsingh said all victims suffered from comorbidities and were elderly.
He said in 2024, there was an increase in Covid-19 cases with nine people, including a minor being hospitalised. He said there were no cases in November and December last year.
Deyalsingh said there were one patient in intensive care, one paediatric patient and four adults warded at the San Fernando General Hospital. He said in Couva there three warded for Covid-19.
He said globally people have stopped taking the Covid-19 vaccine and in T&T, 795,000 doses had to be dumped because they had expired.
Deyalsingh said while the government was trying to get more vaccines, this was a difficult task for small nations.
He said the ministry has administered 22,566 doses of the influenza vaccines with the flu season commencing in October and ending in May every year.
Deyalsingh said the ministry has acquired 75,000 of the influenza vaccine for the 2023/2024 season.
He said these vaccines were not for protection from the common cold but does help fight against the deadly virus.
Deyalsingh said the injection was safe for the elderly, young people, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers.
The influenza vaccines are being administered at the Divali Nagar, Trinicity Mall and at health centres across the country.
