Commentary: Hinds Must Go

THERE is widespread outrage and criticism on all platforms especially on social media concerning the shooting and killing of the six year old Kylie Maloney.

Citizens are fed up with the violence and senseless killing of minors in Trinidad and Tobago.

There are also several photographs in social media of Minister Fitzgerald Hinds appearing to be sleeping on the job. Citizens are outraged with all the killings we have witnessed in 2022 with the most murders we have ever seen in our history, hitting an all-time record of over 600 murders in one year.

The Opposition has brought the failure of Hinds to parliament several times calling for his resignation and they have debated a motion brought by MP Saddam Hosein on the government’s failure in dealing with crime in 2022.

When the Minister of National Security got up to respond to the allegations of his total and inept performance, he had absolutely nothing to say to the country on what their plans he had to curb crime.

We have now seen the bloodiest year in our history with the number of murders in 2022. Under the stewardship of the PNM Government and Minister Hinds, the outrage usually follows a new killing and then dies down until the next one happens, fueled by the fact that the police and the government are the ones in charge of things.

The high-powered weapons that are being allowed into this country by the porous borders and being put in the hands of criminals everyday and are a major issue under Hinds rule, these weapons, with the capability to fire 180 rounds a minute, causes serious damage in it pathway and hits anything in front of it including innocent bystanders, women and children. This is why they use these weapons, they expect at least one of the bullets will hit the intended victim.

The murder of little children has become prevalent in the last few months and these monsters do not care about the collateral damage they inflicted on the public. These monsters are cold blooded and no amount of begging from the families nor the powers that be will curb their lust for crime in this country.

What we really need is a working minister of national security to come up with a plan to remove these high-powered weapons from the criminals, which we do not have. The prime minister himself seems clueless on what to do or say concerning the crime epidemic, speaking of gathering intelligence by our protective services and calling for people who see something to say something. What a big farce as people are afraid for their lives, so does he really think people will come forward to say anything if they see anything? They know they can’t be protected by the police service and the buffoons we have in charge with no proper mechanism in place to protect anyone.

Does Dr Rowley really feel the relatives of criminals and others within these gang communities who are aware of the criminals will really come forward? What a joke!

The loss of innocent young lives are too much for our society to bear anymore and we must get a proper functioning system with a functioning Minister of National Security as of right now we do not have the recipe, nor the formula to bring down crime. When will we ever learn?

Hinds continues to sleep on the job under the apNM Government and has nothing to tell the country about what they will do about the spiraling crime.
