WHILE the nation celebrated Indian Arrival Day on May 30, an educational institution is celebrating all the heritages that form part of Trinidad and Tobago’s diverse culture.
For over ten years, the Pranava Educational Institute has been celebrating Heritage Week.
Annual celebrations were cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the closure of physical school as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and resumed on Tuesday at the school’s compound.
The institute which consists of a daycare, pre-school, primary school and disability centre is located at Temple Street, Beaucarro, Village Carapichaima.
The week-long celebrations will end on Friday with a grand food sale featuring dishes from around the world.
President of the Institute Satish Ramroop told AZP News that the idea was the brainchild of the school’s principal Shrimatie Ramroop and described it as “a noble venture.”
He said the concept was to have an integrated learning experience for the pupils who work together with the teachers to put on the display.
Ramroop said, “Instead of just focusing on Indian Arrival Day and the Indian coming to Trinidad, we also focus on the Africans, Chinese, Spanish and the Europeans. We showcase the different cultures, clothing, instruments, and the children provide entertainment, they make the instruments, make the charts etc.”
Every day there were different activities with documentaries on the various ethnic groups shown on Wednesday.
He added that the Standard Five pupils were especially involved now that the Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA) was over.
Ramroop said usually the school would inform the parents who would invite their friends to the event.
