AFTER two years of battling the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, Borough Day celebrations have returned to Point Fortin.
On Friday evening, the Point Fortin Borough Corporation launched its 42nd celebrations at the Victor Chin Kit Park under the theme Resilient and Moving Forward with prayer by Pastor Raymond Paul.
Point Fortin Mayor Saleema McCree Thomas officially opened celebrations and said she was happy to see patrons obeying the health protocols as Covid-19 was still present.
Thomas added that Point Fortin was the first in Trinidad and Tobago to host such a big festival coming as the Covid-19 pandemic seems to be diminishing.
She said, “So all eyes are on us. We are given an opportunity to spread our wings but we are not taking advantage of it.”
Thomas said, “Though we are still adapting to the pandemic effects the theme reinforces our ability to cope a greater strength and perseverance to effectively overcome the challenges we all face in our daily lives.”
She added the celebrations captivated inclusivity and togetherness as the events focused on sport, health and wellness, small business, entertainment, gospel, women and youth.
Point Fortin became a Borough on April 30, 1980, with Lionel Blake as the first mayor who served four years.
Since then the Borough has grown and produced a wealth of icons in different in sports and culture, from Track and Field athlete Jereem Richards, former Olympian Alvin Daniel; footballers Leroy De Leon, Warren Archibald, Doyle Griffith, Steve David; and music icons like Super Blue, the late Kelvin “Duke” Pope, Iwer George and many others.
