THE Scarborough Roman Catholic Primary School was one of many schools in Tobago facing challenges before all students go back to school in Tobago on April 20. Schools in Trinidad open fully on April 19.

Speaking to AZP News on Monday, T&T Unified Teachers Association’s (TTUTA) Tobago officer Bradon Roberts said although Scarbrough RC was relatively new, the building suffered from moulds due to leaks from a nonfunctioning water pump.

He said, “If water was not in the pipe, you would not have use of the tank water in any significant way, as it would not be strong enough to distribute to different areas.”

Roberts added that other schools had similar issues.

The problems, he said, included poor lighting, leaks and furniture shortages due to termites.

He said, “I am not convinced because I am driving around but have not been seeing any works being done on the schools unless it was done at night.”

Roberts said, “It’s not like schools will fall down but there were teaching issues and if you have to balance it with Covid protocols with those it’s a significant task for principals to manage.”

Robert said, “Schools are not ready to accommodate students.”
