AN assortment of firearms and ammunition was discovered on Tuesday at a warehouse in Freeport.
The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) in a press release stated that during an exercise, conducted, a party of officers found nine AK-47 rifles, eight AR-15 rifles, two pistols, 1,021 rounds of assorted ammunition and 36 magazines in a sealed barrel.
The warehouse is at the Old Southern Main Road, St Mary’s Village. This is the same location a similar cache was found about one year ago.
The exercise was conducted by officers of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), Customs and Excise Division and Central Division CSI, under the supervision of the ACP Central Intelligence Bureau and was a joint effort by the TTPS and the Customs and Excise Division in targeting gangs involved in the transnational trafficking of firearms between North America and Trinidad and Tobago.
Investigations are continuing by officers of the SIU and Customs and Excise Division.
Acting Commissioner of Police Mc Donald Jacob commenting on the find said, “When we remove the weapons, we will reduce the incidence of crime.”
Jacob said he intended to intensify the pressure on the criminal elements operating within society by channelling resources and working strategically with other agencies to remove illegal firearms from communities.
