THE bye-election for the local government district of Debe South ended at 6 pm on Monday
Polling stations were opened from 6 am.
Three candidates representing three political parties are vying for the post that was left vacant since the death of local government councillor Purushottam Singh on February 14, 2021.
On January 3, the date for the bye-election was announced by President Paula-Mae Weekes upon advice from Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley.
Nomination day was held on January 17.
Lorenzo Sammy is representing the Progressive Empowerment Party (PEP), Khemraj Sunil Seecharan is the United National Congress (UNC)’s choice and the People’s National Movement (PNM) has selected Judy Sookdeo as its candidate.
The Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) had stated that the electorate for the upcoming bye-election is 7,124.
Chief Elections Officer Fern Narcis-Scope told AZPNews.com on Monday afternoon that as customary, all preparations were in place for the election and so far operations were running smoothly.
She said, however, as somewhat expected, members of the electorate were progressing slowly in the voting process.
