NEW members of the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) have officially been sworn-in.

On Thursday, the historic 12th inauguration ceremony took place with adherence to the public health protocols with assemblymen being allowed only one guest each. The ceremony lasted 30 minutes.

It was held at the Assembly Legislature, Jerningham Street, Uptown Scarborough, Tobago.

For the first time, 15 assemblymen took an oath of office. And also for the first time in 21 years another political party other than the People’s National Movement (PNM) will lead the THA.  The Progressive Democratic Patriots (PDP) won 14 seats in Monday’s election and its deputy political leader Farley Augustine will be the next Chief Secretary.

In attendance for the ceremony were President Paula-Mae Weekes, Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley and Chief Justice Ivor Archie.

In her short address to the new members,  the President said she hoped the guest limitation and different type of ceremony did not diminish the symbolism of the great honour and task ahead.

She said, “The work has now started. You have a long and perhaps arduous road ahead to get the job done. May all your endeavours meet with success and I wish you well.”

On Monday, the Progressive Democratic Patriots (PDP) led by Watson Duke was able to garner 14 of the 15 electoral districts in the THA elections that is supposed to be held every three years. The PNM was able to win the DarrelSpring/Whim seat.
