THE United National Congress (UNC) is against the extension of the State of Emergency (SoE).
In a release on Thursday, Public Relations Officer, Dr Kirk Meighoo said, “We did not support the extension when the motion was laid in Parliament and will not support this the extension of the SoE.”
He said, “The UNC refuses to be drawn into the PNM’s blame-game melodrama in Parliament.”
The UNC accused the Government of using the Parliament to lie to the people of this country and deflect attention from their failures and incompetence.
Dr Meighoo said that on Wednesday, members of the Opposition held the Government accountable for failing to provide any evidence to justify the extension and restriction on citizens’ rights and freedoms.
He said, “They failed to provide any empirical data showing that the SoE had achieved the desired objective.
“The Prime Minister howled that he would pass the extension whether the Opposition supported it or not, and that he would do it alone. He has now done it on his own, and he must be held responsible for the full consequences.”
