This initiative comes in light of the shipment of 800,000 doses of World Health Organization (WHO) Sinopharn vaccines on Tuesday.

Speaking at the Ministry of Health’s virtual presser on Wednesday, Minister of Health Terrence Deyalsingh said, “Yesterday’s shipment will help us move from managing this disease to hopefully having some degree of control over it. In managing this disease, the Public Health measures, especially the harsh measures harsh of lockdowns and closedowns   cannot be the permanent solution.

“The permanent solution has to be vaccinating as many people as humanely possible, so life as we know it can go back to some degree of normalcy,” Deyalsingh added.

He said that 800,000 doses will vaccinate 400,000 persons with two shots.

Deyalsingh said, “When we add that to the almost 200,000 people we hope to be vaccinated between the end of July and by the first week in August.

“It means that we could have vaccinated fully with two shots, 600,000 persons, 400,000 with yesterday’s shipment plus the roughly 200,000 that we hope to have fully vaccinated by the end of July by the first week in August.

Deyalsingh said, 600,000 is 60% of the adult population whereby the adult population of T&T is about one million people.

He emphasised that this would save jobs, lives and livelihood, saving business and decreasing hospitalisation rates.

“You would not end up in a hospital. You will not end up in an Intensive Care Unit. You will not be one of the statistics that add to the fatality numbers,” Deyalsingh said.

Deyalsingh said, “We are now in a position with the 109 health centers for the first being part of the grid, the six mass vaccination sites under the Regional Health Authorities (RHA’s) and the private sector with their current sites next week.

“We can now vaccinate 20,000 to 25,000 persons per today.”

He added that these vaccines will be made available to all the different groups such as working groups, retail industry via the chamber of commerce, places of religion and NGO’s.

The minister commended on the Prime Minster for receiving his first dose of Sinopharm and urged the public to pick up the mantle.
