THE last two games of the round of 16 were tame affairs in comparison to the others.
Both games lacked the excitement and adventure compared to the games before. Then again, maybe I was spoiled by the superb games on Monday.
England 2 vs Germany 0
29/06/21 12 pm
Wembley
In a game England had no right to win, yet they did due to Germany wasteful abilities in front of the goal. In a very chequered match with two late goals from England, Germany find themselves going home.
Raheem Sterling’s 75th minute goal and Harry Kane first goal of the tournament in the 86th minute sealed a dull affair.
Germany were uncanny in the wasted opportunities and should have at least two goals as well. Goals win matches not attempts. Germany with nine shots and three on target could not get any in the net. England on the other hand got two.
Compared to Monday’s games, this was a boring affair and England in front of their home crowd came out the victors. It is the first time in 55 years England have beaten Germany in a tournament, the last time was 1966 the only time the Three Lions lifted the World Cup throphy.
Sweden 1 vs Ukraine 2
29/06/21 3pm
Hampden Park
An extra time goal in the 121st minute from Artem Dovbyk sent Ukraine to a meeting with England in the quarter finals.
The game changed in the 99th minute when Marcus Danielson from Sweden was ejected for a harsh and violent tackle.
Earlier O Zinchenko sent Ukraine in the lead in the 27th but E Frosberg equalised in the 43rd minute. It was a game with lots of shots, 28 in total with 15 from Ukraine. The shots on target were much less at four for Ukraine and three for Sweden.
The ejection of Danielson, gave Ukraine the impetus needed and they fought to score in order to avoid a penalty shootout. Ukraine scored and it was an excellent goal which set a date with the English. The quarter finals are next.
The round of 16 is over and the quarterfinals loom, the eight survivors are at it again to determine who will play in the semi-finals. This has been the most exciting Euros I have seen in a very long time, only the 2004 edition where Greece defeated an excellent French team was close to this tournament.

Friday QF2: Belgium vs. Italy 3 pm ET
