PORT-OF-SPAIN – ANOTHER lacklustre performance by the West Indies saw them defeated by 59 runs in the second One-Day International (ODI) of the three match series with India at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad.
DLS had to play its part in the rain affected second game just like the first in Guyana where there was no result. It means that India now have an unassailable lead going into the third ODI on Wednesday at the Oval.
Indian batted first and captain Viral Kohli did not disappoint with 120 off 125 balls that included 14 fours and one six off Jason Holder over long-off.
Shreyas Iyer contributed with 71 off 68 balls and Rishabh Pant 20 off 35 balls propelled India to 279 for 7 in their 50 overs. West Indies were set 270 runs to win in 46 overs as DLS came into play after the rains came down.
The pick of the West Indies bowlers was Carlos Brathwaite who took three for 53 off his ten overs.
In West Indies turn at the crease, Evin Lewis top scored with 65 off 80 balls and Nicholas Pooran contributed with 42 off 52. West Indies were all out for 210 in 42 Overs.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the best of the Indian bowlers with four for 31 in eight overs. Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep Yadav took two wickets each.
Chris Gayle in his 300th ODI made only 11 in 24 balls and surpassed Brian Lara’s 10,348 runs in 299 ODIs to be the West Indian with the most runs in this format of the game.
Kohli’s century made him the eight highest run-getter in ODIs as he surpassed Sourav Ganguly’s tally of 11,363. Sachin Tendulkar is the only Indian batsman above him.
This century gives him the distinction of having scored eight against a single opposition. He has the same number of centuries against Australia and Sri Lanka. Only Tendulkar has nine against Australia while no other batsman has more than seven tons against a single opposition.
