FOUR more people have died due to Covid-19 in Trinidad and Tobago with 399 new cases being reported.
This is the highest number of cases reported in a single day by the Ministry of Health.
In its Wednesday update (#715), the ministry stated that the new cases were from samples taken during the period May 2 to May 4.
It stated that two of the new cases were of recently repatriated citizens.
At the virtual media conference on Wednesday morning, Principal Medical Officer, Institutions, Dr Maryam Abdool-Richards said people in T&T were now dying in their thirties from Covid-19.
She also noted that at the current rate of admittance, hospital beds will runout in seven days.
Dr Abdool-Richards said, “We are no longer seeing deaths only in the elderly population or persons with co-existing medical conditions, but we are seeing deaths amongst persons even in the age group of the thirties.”
And Epidemiologist Dr Avery Hinds said there was now an increase in the deaths of women in T&T due to Covid-19.
He said, “Looking at the deaths from just the last week or so, April 25 to May 4 where we saw about 26 deaths, two things have come on stream. One is that there are more women proportionally than what we were seeing before, where one quarter of the patients passing on were women and three quarters being men.”
There were now more than 3,000 active Covid-19 cases in T&T.
