RECREATIONAL sports both indoor and outdoor will be prohibited from Good Friday (April 2).

But, training of athletes involved in national and international sports will continue.

This was revealed by Minister of Health Terrence Deyalsingh at a virtual press conference on Thursday.

There were three more deaths due to Covid-19 announced by the Chief Medical Officer Dr Roshan Parasram.

Deyalsingh said this was “three deaths too much,” and many more could die if health protocols were not followed.

He said, “What we have noticed is that it is more than 22 people, the after-game lime is becoming dangerous where food and drink start to come out and people are congregating without mask wearing.

“So, we are going back to how we were. For the time being, until further advised, we will be rolling back the recreational sports for team and contact sports both indoors and outdoors.”

Chief Medical Officer Dr Roshan Parasram said people weren’t wearing their masks or shields and were also congregating in small spaces for more than 15 minutes.

Parasram said it seemed that this type of congregating was one of the main drivers pushing this latest spike in the Covid-19 spread.

Meanwhile, Deyalsingh urged caution heading into the Easter weekend.

He called for discipline the population had in the early part of February and last October.

Deyalsingh added, “We want people to have a safe, happy, and holy Easter but we are asking people not to congregate in any type of setting over the weekend. You can go to your beaches but be careful. Let’s not have big limes at home, big limes in public, wear your masks.”
