ACTING Commissioner of Police Mc Donald Jacob is being called upon to launch an investigation into the 4,000 plus Covid-19 deaths.
The call comes from former government minister Dr Tim Gopeesingh who is alleging that Government is hiding information from the public.
Speaking at the Opposition media briefing on Sunday, Dr Gopeesingh alleged that many Covid-19 patients suffered neglect at public healthcare institutions which led to their deaths.
To Jacob he said, “You must set up a team to investigate what went wrong and how many people died needlessly and carelessly. That is a crime committed upon the citizens of T&T.
“I asked the Director of Public Prosecutions to work with the commissioner of police. People must be held accountable for their deaths.”
Dr Gopeesingh also spoke about the report of the Cabinet-appointed committee led by Prof Terence Seemungal to investigate the Covid-19 situation in the country.
In February, government received the report and Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh had said there were short-term, medium-term and long-term measures for the improvement of healthcare in the public health system.
Dr Gopeesingh said, “We can’t hear a quiver from the government on what measures they have taken to implement any of the eighteen recommendations.”
According to the report, Dr Gopeesingh said,it showed that 95 per cent of the patients who went into the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) died.
“They (government) knew it and they were hiding it deliberately,” he claimed.
The medical doctor commended the team for the report saying they “spoke the truth.”
He also said that most of the Covid-19 infections throughout the pandemic could have been avoided if Government-led by Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley had implemented proper policies from day one.
