NINE guns have been seized since Carnival Friday, 25 persons arrested and over 50 fixed penalty notices were issued.
This is according to a release by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) on Tuesday.
Police reported that an anti-crime exercise was conducted between the hours of 4 pm on Sunday and 4 am on Monday by members of the Western Division Task Force which included road check exercises at various locations throughout the Division.
Officers conducting one of these exercises, near Western Main Road, Carenage, were alerted by a passing motorist, that occupants of a dark-coloured vehicle had thrown an object out of the vehicle’s window, into a bushy area. A search was conducted, and officers found a P80 9mm firearm, loaded with a magazine containing 15 rounds of 9mm ammunition.
During an anti-crime exercise, between the hours of 9 am and 11 am on Monday, South Western Division officers responding to information regarding the arrival of a vessel near Erin Beach, proceeded to the location where they observed a man walking along the beach with a backpack on his back.
Upon seeing the officers the man dropped the backpack and ran in the opposite direction. Officers pursued the suspect, but he escaped. A search of the backpack led to the discovery of a revolver with three rounds of .38 spl ammunition.
Suspect disappears into J’ouvert celebrations
In Couva, officers attached to the Couva Criminal Investigations Department, conducted a mobile patrol on Monday at around 10 am. While proceeding along Market Street, they observed a man place an object in a bushy area and cover it with a black and white bandana. The suspect, upon seeing the police vehicle, ran in a westerly direction.
One of the officers chased after the suspect on foot but he escaped into the crowd at the J’ouvert celebrations on Southern Main Road. A search of the area where the object was placed, resulted in the discovery of a Ruger P95DC fitted with a magazine containing 10 rounds of 9mm ammunition.
And also on Monday, North Eastern Division officers conducted an anti-crime exercise in Santa Cruz between 7 pm and 11 pm. During the exercise, they proceeded to a track along Blackford Street where they observed a group of men, who dispersed as they approached. The officers searched the area and discovered a Glock 22 pistol with a loaded magazine and three rounds of 40-calibre ammunition.
