The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) via media release on Thursday reported that 51 cellphones were seized, 30 cellphone chargers, 53 lighters and 207 grammes of marijuana following searches from various prison cells.
Other items found included improvised weapons, knives, digital scales, earbuds, wrapping paper and cigarettes.
The TTPS stated that further charges are expected in relation to the recent findings at the Port of Spain Prison.
“The authorities are continuing their efforts to clamp down on criminal activities from behind prison walls,” the TTPS stated.
The exercise was coordinated by Deputy Commissioner of Police Suzette Martin, Commissioner of Prisons Carlos Corraspe, Assistant Commissioner of Prisons Lee Davis, and Senior Superintendent of Prisons Thomas.
It was supervised by ASP Stanley and included members of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), the Guard and Emergency Branch (GEB), Crime Scene Investigators (CSIs), and the Prisons Emergency Response Unit (ERU).
This exercise follows a similar one conducted on January 31 at the Maximum Security Prison, Arouca where officers from the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence and Investigations laid charges against four prisoners.
