THE Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) is losing 25 million gallons per day (mgd) in water production due to the lack of rainfall this dry season.
And therefore, has made adjustments to water supply schedules throughout Trinidad and Tobago.
In a release on Thursday, it stated, “The heat, resultant dryness and lack of rainfall throughout the 2024 dry season, has caused an average daily loss of production of approximately 25 million gallons per day (mgd).
“This represents approximately 10% of the Authority’s total daily production. To mitigate the impact of this situation, the Authority has been enacting various aspects of its Water Supply Management Plan over the course of the dry season.”
This includes system adjustments along the transmission and distribution pipeline networks, amended schedules, the introduction of new groundwater sources in some areas, expanded water trucking service, as well as the implementation of water use restrictions and encouraging citizens conserve water through our “Value Every Drop” campaign.
Amendments to the water supply schedules includes:
- Parts of North East, served by the North Oropouche Water Treatment, due reduced production from 20 to 17 mgd;
- Parts of South East and Central, served by the Navet Water Treatment Plant, due to a drop in production from 19 to 16 mgd; and
- In Tobago, the Courland, Richmond, Kings Bay and Hillsborough West Water Treatment Plants have experienced a combined reduction in production from 4.6 to 2.7 mgd.
WASA called on its customers to exercise proper water conservation habits.
