OUT of about 1,500 positive Covid-19 samples tested for variants of concern, 42 have been found to be Delta.
This according to Professor of Molecular Genetics and Virology Christine Carrington at the virtual media conference of the Ministry of Health on Saturday.
But she stressed, “The percentage of positives amongst the samples that we receive is not necessarily a reflection of the percentage in the wider population.
“Because the samples we receive not all of them are random samples.”
She said in Trinidad and Tobago since December 2020, the University of the West Indies lab had screen about 1,500 positive Covid-19 samples for variants of concern.
She said the genome sequencing for variants of concern has detected Alpha, Gamma and Delta with the latter two being associated with community spread.
