The United Kingdom ambassador to the United States has reigned over a row involving leaked emails in which he was critical of the Trump administration.
Sir Kim Darroch has left the plump diplomatic posting after US President Donald Trump referred to him as “wacky” and a “very stupid guy.”
The BBC is reporting that the Foreign Office has confirmed Sir Kim’s decision to step down today.
It stated that Sir Kim said he wanted to put an end to speculation, adding the leak had made it “impossible” for him to do his job.
The UK government had launched a formal investigation after President Trump said he will no longer work with Sir Kim. This after leaked emails revealed Sir Kim had called the Trump administration “inept”.
Number 10 previously called the leak “unfortunate” and said the UK and US still shared a “special and enduring” relationship. Downing Street had also said Sir Kim had its full support.
President Trump had tweeted: “The wacky Ambassador that the U.K. foisted upon the United States is not someone we are thrilled with, a very stupid guy. He should speak to his country, and Prime Minister May, about their failed Brexit negotiation, and not be upset with my criticism of how badly handled. I told @theresa_may how to do that deal, but she went her own foolish way-was unable to get it done. A disaster! I don’t know the Ambassador but have been told he is a pompous fool. Tell him the USA now has the best Economy & Military anywhere in the World, by far…:
