PUERTO Rico and the US and British Virgin Islands have been blasted with heavy rains and high winds from Hurricane Dorian.

This comes two years after Maria wreaked devastation.

The Category 1 storm has maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometres an hour with even higher gusts Wednesday evening, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

While the storm spared the main island of Puerto Rico, it hit the territory’s islands of Culebra and Vieques, off the eastern coast.

Dorian is expected to continue its northwesterly path away from the US and British Virgin Islands. It could then move over the Atlantic east of the southeastern Bahamas on Thursday and Friday, the NHC said.
