On Monday, Prime Minister Stuart Young said the government he leads, has no interference with criminal charges.
Young who held a press conference in Tobago to speak about the possibility of a Sandals resort in Tobago was asked about the charges which were dropped.
Lee and other UNC members including political leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar claimed political victimisation when Lee was detained three years ago for two criminal charges, one of misbehaviour in public office, and the other for conspiracy to defraud.
Young said, “The Central Government, the government that I lead, we have no interaction with criminal charges. We are not the persons who bring criminal charges. There is an Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions that is a constitutionally independent office.”
He continued, “I think that needs to be directed at the DPP, it certainly wasn’t anyone in the government or in the PNM government that charged Mr Lee.”
Young also said, “I assume whoever charged him had evidence they thought would support a charge. From my experience in the court, it is for a court to determine assuming it was determined by a court.”
