A CANADIAN social media vlogger has been charged under the Sedition Act of Trinidad and Tobago.

Christopher Arthur Hughes, known on social media as Chris Must List, was detained, interviewed and informed of the allegations against him, a release from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) stated on Thursday.

That release was titled: “YouTuber on TTPS Naughty List Charged Under Sedition Act.”

Hughes, 45, was formally charged by Sgt Lee of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) with publishing a statement with a seditious intention on May 29, 2024. 

The release stated, “The investigation into Christopher Arthur Hughes began after his social media activities under the pseudonym ‘Chris Must List’ came to light. Hughes allegedly posted videos featuring individuals professing to be gang members, advocating criminal activities, and using threatening language.

“After consultation with the Director of Public Prosecutions Roger Gaspard SC, he directed detectives to charge the accused under Section 4(1)(c) of the Sedition Act. “

The release stated that investigations were coordinated by DCP Suzette Martin and spearheaded by Snr Supt Paponette, with the assistance of Insp Stanley and a team of detectives from the SIU, Cyber Crime Unit, and RAU, under the legal direction of Attorney at Law/Legal Officer Cpl Zaheer Ali.

Hughes interviewed a number of gangs across the country since he arrived in Trinidad about three weeks ago.

Some of his videos on YouTube, which had more than 100,000 views, showed men, alleged to be gang members with guns saying that they were being treated badly by the government and not being given opportunities like jobs.
