THE county of Victoria continues to lead the way with the highest number of active positive Covid-19 cases in the country.
On Monday, during the Ministry of Health’s virtual Covid-19 update, Chief Medical Officer, Dr Roshan Parasram, said while the data was provided regularly, what was interesting was county Victoria alone with 41.4% of the active cases.
Dr Parasram said, “What jumped out for me straight away is Victoria is at 41.4% of the active cases in the community which is quite a large number.
“What we have seen traditionally over the last year or two is that county Caroni and Victoria at least for the last six months to a year, have been sharing 25% and 23% respectively but now we see a great preponderance of the cases in Victoria.”
Caroni was second at 14.5% with the least affected county being St David/St Andrew accounting for 1.7% of the active cases.
Tobago recorded 9.2% which Dr Parasram said was a bit higher than what was expected for Tobago.
He also said that 52.1% of patients were isolated at home with comorbidities. Of the isolated cases, no symptoms were detected in 47.1% of them.
Hypertension was the leading comorbidity amongst Covid-19 patients throughout the pandemic with most recent data showing that 37.7% of patients had hypertension. Diabetes followed with 28.6% and asthma with 16.1%.
“If we look at asthma, diabetes and hypertension together, they contribute to 82.4% of the comorbidities. The others play a much smaller role,” Dr Parasram said.
