UWI to Honour 11 Graduates

KINGSTON – The University of the West Indies (The UWI) says it will honour 11 graduates with honorary degrees during this year’s graduation ceremonies across its five campuses from October to November.

The UWI said that the degrees will be conferred on those graduates “who have made significant contributions to their fields”  and are in keeping with the tradition of “recognising exceptional individuals.”

It said that this year’s honorary graduands represent a diverse range of professions, each bringing decades of experience and impactful contributions in fields such as music, agriculture, religion, science and research, and aviation.

According to the UWI, those graduates who will receive the Doctor of Laws (LL.D.) degree are Professor Paget Henry, who has been at Brown University in the United States since 1987 for Caribbean Philosophy, Sociology and Political Thought,  Lyndon Gardiner, the the founder and Chairman of interCaribbean Airways, the Trinidadian chartered accountant, Nigel Lewis Romano, the late Jamaican business executive, Donald Wehby, and the former St. Lucian government minister, agricultural consultant, telecommunications,  Sir Calixte George.

Others who will be awarded honorary degrees are musicians Pierce Antonio Rudder of Barbados and the Trinidadian Mungal Patasar, the Jamaican Marcia Griffiths and Bishop Robert Clarke, who will  all receive the Doctor of Literature degree, while the Trinidadian Professor Niranjan Kissoon will receive the Doctor of Science (DSc) degree.

“As the regional university prepares to honour these 11 outstanding individuals, the 2025 graduation ceremonies promise to be a celebration of not only academic excellence but also the profound impact these leaders have made in their respective fields. Their stories are a testament to the power of vision, dedication, and transformative change,” the UWI said.

These ceremonies are scheduled to take place from October 11 to November 8, 2025, across the five UWI campuses. (CMC)
