THE United States of America (USA) is heading to its four millionth case of corona virus, with more than 2,600 new infections recorded every hour.

According to Reuters, this is the highest rate globally as it took just 98 days, from January 21, for the country to record its millionth case of Covid-19.

The number of cases increased to two million after another 43 days and then after 27 more days to three million cases.

Since then, only 16 days have passed and the figure is heading to four million, with a rate of 43 new cases a minute.

With over 143,000 deaths, the US ranks sixth globally for the highest deaths per capita, exceeded by the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Chile and France.

Globally, the rate of new infections shows no sign of slowing, with the disease accelerating the fastest in the US and South America, according to the Reuters tally, based on official reports.
