THE United States Government has begun a new initiative aimed at strengthening Trinidad and Tobago’s disaster response capacity through training and equipment support for the Trinidad and Tobago Emergency Management Agency (TEMA).

The support, provided through the US Embassy in Port of Spain and the US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), focuses on improving the management of TEMA’s Disaster Relief Warehouses (DRW) to ensure they operate efficiently and transparently.

According to a statement on Tuesday from the US Embassy, the initiative builds on the longstanding bilateral relationship between the two countries. In 2016, SOUTHCOM constructed TEMA’s disaster relief warehouse through its Humanitarian Assistance Program at a cost of US$265,000.

The new initiative will be carried out in two phases and is intended to enhance disaster preparedness, promote greater self‑reliance and deliver benefits to both nations.

The first phase began on Tuesday with a five‑day training programme at TEMA’s Emergency Operations Centre in Tobago. Fifteen TEMA personnel are being trained to implement warehouse inventory control software to improve management of disaster relief supplies and ensure long‑term sustainability.

The second phase, which will take place later this year, will involve the delivery and installation of specialised warehouse equipment.

The embassy said the training and equipment will enable TEMA to independently lead disaster response operations and better manage emergency supplies.

It added that strengthening Trinidad and Tobago’s disaster preparedness also reduces the likelihood that the country will need large‑scale assistance from the United States in the event of a major disaster.

Speaking at the opening of the training session, US Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Charlie J Franta III said the programme reflects the enduring partnership between the two countries.

“As we celebrate Freedom 250, marking the 250th anniversary of American independence, we reflect not only on our founding ideals but also on the enduring role of diplomacy and partnerships like this in shaping our nation’s journey and global impact,” Franta said.

He added that military cooperation remains a key pillar of the relationship between the two nations.

“By investing in disaster preparedness and empowering local agencies, we not only strengthen regional stability but also ensure the safety and well‑being of Trinbagonian and American citizens. Together, we are building a more resilient future for both our great nations,” he said.
