A MOTHER does not disown her children.
This according to the United Patriots Education Officer candidate Shanta Devi Seepersad at the Felicity Hindu School on Tuesday night.
Speaking at a meeting of the United Patriots for the June 15 UNC internal elections.
In a message to Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Seepersad said, “A mother does not disown her children. A mother does not forsake her children,” adding that the battle was not against Persad-Bissessar as her name is not on the ballot paper.
Seepersad also made reference to the opposition leader describing the UP as PNM during the Star Team’s meeting on Monday.

She said, “I come before you tonight as a child of the UNC, a child who campaigned with the UNC, as a child who went to meetings at Emerald Plaza and Aranguez Savannah.”
Seepersad stressed, “I feel hurt as a child of our great party when I hear the leader of our party calling us PNM but I want to make it abundantly clear tonight. I am no PNM. And I stand proud with my head held high as a child of UNC born and bred in the house of the rising sun.
“I am loyal to the UNC and after this battle I will remain loyal to the UNC.”
She questioned why the party that promoted democracy was now chastising its own members for practising their democratic right.
Seepersad said, “And then they wonder why they have no young people and Gen Z’s in the party.”
She said she stood proud along with the candidate for the Tobago Regional Representative Chenille Roberts as being two young Gen Z’s on the UP team.
Seepersad said her inspiration came from the Mahabharat to fight this battle, “like Arjuna, I was hesitant and I was doubtful. I didn’t want to fight my own UNC family.”

She said, “Lord Krishna reminded Arjuna of his duty, I understood my duty. It is never easy when you have to confront your family and there are those telling you to drop your arrows.”
Seepersad said, “You must remember your duty and write the pages of your (Bhagavad) Gita on what is right. We cannot abandon our duty as a party or as a people.”
She said, ”We need to embrace that we are working for one goal and one goal only and that is to remove the PNM come 2025 with a stronger team.”
