The Opposition United National Congress (UNC) has slammed Friday’s press conference held by Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley, deeming it “vacuous and superficial.”
The party expressed concerns regarding the topics of national security and the crucial energy sector, which it felt remain grossly unaddressed.
Following press conference at Whitehall, the UNC criticised Dr Rowley for not tackling the pressing issue of crime across the nation, particularly highlighting the purported failure of Police Commissioner Erla Harewood-Christopher to meet important mandates. The release was issued by UNC’s Public Relations Officer Dr Kirk Meighoo.
UNC also accused him of evading discussion about the performance of National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds, whom they referred to as “atrocious.”
The Opposition accused the Prime Minister of relying on “rambling bureaucratic language and generalities” rather than offering concrete measures to combat the spike in violent crime. It described Dr Rowley’s statements as lacking in accountability and devoid of policy announcements that could potentially ease the public’s increasing safety concerns.
When asked by the media to comment on the crime situation, the Prime Minister reportedly deferred a comprehensive response to the following week, a move the UNC interpreted as him buying time to conjure up new excuses while “nationals remain at the mercy of pitiless murderers.”
The UNC’s said his response to the Dragon Gas project was “void and inane.”
With the reintroduction of General Licence 44 by the United States on April 18, which could potentially affect the project due to its connections with Venezuelan sanctions, the Prime Minister admitted relying on a “carve out” from the US Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC), the UNC stated.
The opposition termed this as Dr Rowley’s “‘cap-in-hand” approach to US authorities, suggesting desperation due to an over-reliance on the Dragon Gas initiative amid a lack of economic diversification.
The UNC stated that the prime minister’s “singular reliance” on this energy project reflects an economy on uncertain footing, especially in light of the imminent sanctions.
It stated that Dr Rowley had “nothing to report” to the citizens, who it sees as beset by rampant criminal activity and a “faltering one-track economy.”
The UNC said the Rowley administration was the “worst in the country’s history,” allegedly driving citizens to unprecedented levels of despair.
