THE post of political leader of the United National Congress (UNC) will be contested on August 17.
Nomination Day will be July 27.
UNC’s General Secretary Peter Kanhai issued a media release on Monday stating that at a meeting of the national executive held on Monday, the decision was made for the dates of nomination and election of political leader.
“The public and the party membership will be advised of further details in due course,” Kanhai stated.
UNC’s political leader and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has indicated that she will run again for the esteemed position she has held since 2010.
All attempts in the past to have a change in UNC’s political leadership since 2010 have been futile as Persad-Bissessar still commands the majority of internal party support.
Last week, the UNC National Women’s Arm stated it proudly supported Persad-Bissessar as political leader in the upcoming internal leadership elections.
The UNC National Women’s Arm stated, “We are confident that Mrs Persad-Bissessar remains the most experienced, competent, and unifying choice to lead the UNC through the next chapter. Her record of dedication to people-centered policies and her unwavering fight for the rights of the underrepresented demonstrate a leadership rooted in compassion, intellect, and courage.”
On July 7, at the UNC’s first Monday night meeting since winning the April 28 general election, Persad-Bissessar announced, “I give you notice tonight. I intend to contest again for the position of political leader.”
She also said, “Any and every member of the UNC, you have a right to file a nomination for the position of political leader.”
The last internal election saw Persad-Bissessar winning by a landslide victory over the United Patriots, led by former Mayaro MP Rushton Paray.
