THE United National Congress (UNC) internal elections will be held on Saturday June 15, 2024, at venues to be announced.
This was stated in a release by the UNC early Saturday morning.
The announcement comes after five UNC MPs, who have been dubbed the dissidents, called for internal elections.
UNC Political Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar had always maintained that UNC national executive elections would be called when they are constitutionally due.
UNC MPs – Rushton Paray, Dinesh Rambally, Rodney Charles, Anita Haynes-Alleyne and Dr Rai Ragbir – have all called for internal elections. Paray, Rambally and Charles all held press conferences also calling for Persad-Bissessar to stepdown as political leader.
These elections are for positions in the party and excludes the post of political leader which is up next year.
The release stated that nomination forms will be available at the UNC Headquarters, 31 Mulchan Seuchan Road, Chaguanas, from Monday between the hours of 9 am and 4pm.
Another release by UNC General Secretary Peter Kanhai on Friday night called for nominations for two Local Government bye-elections.
He said, “The UNC announces that it will be accepting nominations for the upcoming local government bye-elections in the electoral districts of Quinam/Morne Diablo and Lengua/Indian Walk.
“Nomination Forms will be available at the UNC Headquarters, 31 Mulchan Seuchan Road, Chaguanas, from Monday 13 May 2024, between the hours of 9am and 4pm.
“The deadline for submitting nominations is on Friday 17 May 2024 at 4pm.
