A United National Congress (UNC) local government councillor’s office is firebombed just before the curfew began at 9pm on Wednesday.
The councillor for Cunupia in the Chaguanas Borough Corporation Richard Sukdeo said he does not know the motive for the attack.
He said the windows, drapes, carpet and desks were damaged in the incident at his office on the Sothern Main Road in Cunupia.
Sukdeo said the police have been contacted and are investigating the incident.
In a release on Friday, Opposition MP for St Augustine Khadijah Ameen called for justice after the firebombing
Ameen condemned the attack and questioned whether Opposition representatives were being targeted. She also called for an increased national security presence and more patrols of police officers.
This came after the firebombing at yet another one of her colleagues, she said.
Sukdeo, who is a Councillor from the Chaguanas Borough Corporation said, “He received a call on Wednesday at 9pm that his office was on fire, and on arrival police and fire officers were already there.”
Sukdeo said they observed a window located to the western side of the building was broken and a burnt piece of cloth in a glass bottle was seen in the interior of the building. Officers detected a strong scent of what was suspected to be an accelerant.
He said, “Investigations were ongoing but hoped it was not politically motivated.”
Sukdeo recalled a few months ago, when the Members of Parliament offices for Moruga/Tableland and Barataria/San Juan were the subject of similar vandalism.
He has been councillor since January after a bye election for that seat with the elevation of Vandana Mohit to the Parliament as MP for Chaguanas East after the 2020 general elections.
