THE United Kingdom will get its first British-Indian prime minister.
Rishi Sunak was elected leader of the Conservative Party on Divali day. He’s a practising Hindu and is expected officially to become the head of government when the British Parliament meets on Tuesday.
He was publicly backed by close to 200 Tory MPs before the nomination deadline on Monday.
The former chancellor of the exchequer Sunak stood alone as head of the Tory party after Commons Leader Penny Mordaunt dropped out. She failed to secure enough support among MPs.
At 42, Sunak is set to succeed Liz Truss to become the youngest prime minister for more than 200 years.
Sir Graham Brady, the chairman of the 1922 committee of backbenchers Tory MP, announced Sunak as the new leader on Monday afternoon.
Truss resigned after she could not deliver on her mandate to put a handle on inflation and rising taxes.
