The Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) approached the Industrial Court on Sunday to secure an injunction against the Oilfield Workers Trade Union (OWTU).

This followed the industrial action by certain workers on October 25 and 26. This action severely disrupted T&TEC’s operations as employees failed to report for rostered duty, a release by T&TEC stated.

T&TEC’s stated its legal action was prompted by the OWTU’s refusal to halt the illegal activities and urge its members to resume work.

Consequently, T&TEC sought injunctive relief from the court. The OWTU, represented by counsel, agreed to an undertaking to cease all industrial action and instruct its members to comply with their employment contracts and report for duty.

Despite an earlier press release by the OWTU, T&TEC clarified that the court’s undertaking functions similarly to an injunction, with penalties for non-compliance. The hearing for injunctive relief has been adjourned to November 11, 2024.

Additionally, T&TEC reported the OWTU for industrial relations offences, including taking unauthorised industrial action and failing to negotiate in good faith, as per the Industrial Relations Act.
