TRINIDAD and Tobago has recorded its first adverse reaction to vaccination.

It was a case of thrombocytopenia which is a low level of platelets in a post Covid-19 vaccinated person.

This information was revealed on Saturday by Chief Medical Officer Dr Roshan Parasram at a press conference hosted by   Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley.

Dr Parasram said, “We have detected one case of this syndrome in a post vaccinated person which meets the clinical criteria. It’s between five and 28 days.

“The person did have thrombocytopenia, which is a low level of platelets and is doing very well.”

He said the patient was being well cared for and the case will be reported to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

Dr Parasram said this was the first such case since vaccinations began and was actually plausible.

And epidemiologist Dr Avery Hinds and his medical team were investigating as a matter of urgency a case of the UK variant (B117) Dr Parasram added.

He said so far of the samples sent to be tested for variants since December 2020, there were 504, 100 of which were the Brazilian (P1 variant) and 1.8% showed the UK variant.

Since the first P1 variant, there have been 363 tests, 100 of which were positive representing 27.6% Dr Parasram said.

He said, “The last case of the B117 that we had and was recently investigated and was confirmed who is  a person that is a national , we are under epidemiological investigation at this point, does not seem to have  a link to repatriation at this point.”

The public will be given more information on those two cases within the next week, the CMO said.
