Tropical Storm Peter Forms

A BROAD area of low pressure associated with a Tropical Wave is upgraded to Tropical Depression 16 overnight and now to Tropical Storm Peter.

In a 6am update, the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS), meteorologist Paula Wellingtonsaid, “ At 5am, this morning a further upgrade was attained, to Tropical Storm Peter whereby the storm is located 1015 km east of the Northern Leeward Islands with maximum sustained winds near 65 km/hr.”

Officials said, “Some strengthening is expected during the next day or so. TS Peter continues to move in a northwesterly direction at 24 km/h and, with this general motion is expected to pass well to the north of the Northern Leeward Islands.”

However, there are no watches and warning in effect at this moment.

“This system poses no direct threat to Trinidad, Tobago, Grenada and its dependencies,” TTMS said.

The MET Office stated that it will continue to closely monitor these systems and will issue an update at 6pm today or earlier, if the situation warrants.  Members of the public are advised to pay attention to information via the www.metoffice.gov.ttor social media apps Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
