TRINIDAD and Tobago is on alert for thunderstorm activities associated with Tropical Storm Elsa which has formed in the Atlantic.
The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) in a 6.30 am update on Thursday indicated that although the storm poses no direct threat to T&T, however, the system is likely to produce periods of rain and isolated thunderstorm activity, with possible gusty winds.
“The Potential Tropical Cyclone #5, which TTMS has been closely monitoring, was upgraded to a Tropical Depression overnight and eventually to Tropical Storm Elsa this morning,” it noted,
The TTMS stated, “At 5am this morning, TS Elsa was located approximately 1,390 km east-southeast of the Windward Islands, centred near 9.4N 48.8W and moving towards the west near 41 km/hr.”
It is projected to move across the portions Windward Islands or the southern Leeward Islands, north of Trinidad and Tobago, on Friday and then move into the eastern Caribbean Sea by late Friday night.
The TTMS added that it is likely that feeder band activity associated with the system will produce periods of rain/showers and isolated thunderstorm activity with possible gusty winds on Friday into Saturday over Trinidad and Tobago.”
The TTMS stressed, “We wish to underscore that at this time, the system poses no direct threat to Trinidad, Tobago, Grenada and its dependencies.”
