ANOTHER Trinidad and Tobago national is trying to return home during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Ziyad Mohammed, 27, has been working as an accountant in Tortola in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) and his one-year contract came to end in March this year.
He is now without a job and stays in an apartment by himself during the Covid-19 lock down on the island which has recorded one death due to the virus.
Mohammed said he knows about one other Trinidadian who is in Tortola with similar circumstances.
He said a charter flight to return home will cost about US$10,000 and they are making an appeal to other Trinidadians in BVI or nearby islands to contact them so they could share the cost of the flight.
In the meantime, Mohammed said his family has written to National Security Minister Stuart Young requesting an exemption to return to Trinidad since the borders are closed due to Covid-19.
Mohammed said Tortola was initially on lock down for two weeks with a curfew that has been somewhat relaxed.
He said he is staying in an apartment by himself with little or no outside contact.
“I was never so glad to want to come home,” he said in a telephone interview on Tuesday.
Mohammed said the cost of living is very high in Tortola and was now finding it difficult.
He said he has sold his car and this would only cover about three months’ rent.
in Trinidad, his mother Narisha said the family was making all efforts to contact the National Security Ministry so her son could get an exemption.
She said he was willing to be placed in quarantine upon his return to Trinidad.
