TPP Candidate Attacked on Walkabout

TOBAGO People’s Party (TPP) candidate for Tobago East, David Thomas was reportedly attacked by a People’s National Movement (PNM) supporter during a walkabout on Friday.
Both the TPP and the PNM have issued statements on the incidents.
The TPP stated that it strongly condemned the assault on its candidate, which allegedly occurred on Friday evening while he was canvassing in Speyside.

“At approximately 5 pm, Mr Thomas was assaulted by (name stated) while visiting a home along the Windward Road (Canal Head), Speyside, Tobago.
“During the attack, a chair was pulled from beneath Mr Thomas, he was shoved in the chest and then pushed against a door. Police responded swiftly to the scene and Mr Thomas was taken to the Roxborough Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment,” the TPP release stated.

The party urged the relevant authorities to conduct a full investigation and take the necessary steps to ensure that justice is served.
The TPP stated, “We continue to stand by Mr Thomas in full support and extend our gratitude to all those who have expressed concern for his well-being.”
The PNM’s Tobago Council stated that it was aware of the allegations.
The PNM stated, “Reports have linked a supporter of our party to this unfortunate event, and we express our sincere concern for Mr Thomas’ well-being and extend our thoughts to his loved ones during this time.”

The release stated, “The PNM Tobago Council unequivocally denounces violence, aggression, and any form of hostility in the political arena. We urge the public to refrain from speculation or assigning blame before the full facts of the incident have been established by the relevant authorities.”

The PNM also stated, “We reaffirm our commitment to peaceful democratic engagement, mutual respect among political opponents and the upholding of justice and accountability. Our campaign will continue to be rooted in the values of civility, community and integrity.”
