AFTER months of trying to deflect accusations and possible scandals, Boris Johnson decided to step down as leader of his.
But only in the wake of his senior cabinet ministers, including Treasury chief Rishi Sunak and a very long list of junior officials resigning. This made it difficult and virtually impossible for him to run the government. He tried to hold on for a while, but as more departures mounted the result was inevitable, that he had no choice to leave and resign if the government was to get back on its feet.
Mr Johnson even had to apologise for appointing as a senior parliamentary official, a man whom he knew had a history of allegedly making unwanted sexual advances to women.The British Constitution is extremely robust and so Mr Johnson will stay on in a caretaker capacity until a new leader is selected. The British system set rules and regulations that actually stipulates the conduct of men and women that hold the reins of power within their administration.
The resignation of Johnson came when his ministers’ unwillingness to work with him showed the true mettle of their resolve.
Whereas it can be contrasted with what’s happening here in Trinidad and Tobago. Where not a single member of Parliament under Dr Rowley’s leadership would ever follow the example set in Britain and give up their fat salaries, perks and power to do the right thing even in the midst of accusations of corruption and alleged land grabbing a member of parliament.
In recent times we have seen many accusations under the leadership of the Dr Rowley led Government, to name a few facing him currently:
A collapse of roadways and our basic infrastructure;
The highest rate of crime seen the last five years and an increase in the murder rate that is frightening;
High food prices including 33% increase in flour;
Increase in fuel prices four times;
Resignation of the chairman of the Commission of Enquiry into the death of the Paria divers’ deaths;
Wages negotiations collapse with the unions;
Abuse at children’s homes across the country with allegedly a paedophile ring that includes T&T top officials;
Foster Cummings alleged corruption allegations; and
Madness and mayhem in the city with riots and burning of tyres on the highways to demonstrate against police killings.
No one within his administration is able to demonstrate the tenacity, quality and professionalism of the ministers in Mr Johnson’s administration, as it only illustrates that it is all about a paycheck and loyalty even if it means being a part of something rotten to the core. Our citizens should not be prepared to accept this anymore where they seem to compromise everything they do. The main thing that they are absolutely not doing is serving the people. The recent political debacle in Britain with the resignation of the PM shows how a real Westminster system should work and it is actually a guide and the architect of our constitution and how our system should work.
This shows how it should operate and benefit all the men and women of T&T, where our representatives are suppose to uphold the highest standards of integrity, honesty, uprightness and decency in the conduct of the affairs of state but not to have “ah eat ah food” modus operandi.
