PLANS to overhaul security protocols at Piarco International Airport were announced during a press conference and terminal tour of government officials and police on Tuesday.

The initiative, led by Minister of Homeland Security Roger Alexander, Police Commissioner Allister Gueverro, and Deputy Commissioner Junior Benjamin, underscores a unified effort to bolster safety for travellers and staff through inter-agency cooperation, a release from the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation stated.

Gueverro revealed plans for a 24-hour tactical police presence at the airport, including frequent K9 unit patrols and the deployment of specialised TTPS resources.

“These measures are part of a broader strategy integrating intelligence-sharing, cross-agency collaboration, and community trust,” he stated, noting that officers are already actively stationed at the facility.

The TTPS also pledged additional support to the Airports Authority of Trinidad and Tobago (AATT), which oversees day-to-day operations.

Officials — including AATT General Manager Hayden Newton and Deputy General Manager for Security Col Albert Griffith— conducted a walkthrough of the terminal to inspect newly implemented systems.

Alexander said, “Safety at our airports is non-negotiable. This partnership ensures a secure environment for all users.”

Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Eli Zakour hailed the collaboration as a “critical milestone” in safeguarding national infrastructure.

He said, “This multi-agency approach strengthens prevention, preparedness, and deterrence.”

The enhanced security framework arrives amid growing emphasis on regional travel safety and follows months of planning between the TTPS, AATT, and Homeland Security. Officials confirmed regular updates will be provided to the public as the measures evolve.
