A PETITION in support of having Gary Griffith re-hired as police commissioner is posted on online.
The petition featured on change.org already has almost 4,000 signatures.
It states, “This petition is in Support of Gary Griffith the rightful and Just Commissioner of Police, we stand with CoP Griffith and reject the handful of politicians and rogue elements that are attempting to usurp his position. The ONLY chance our country has in fighting the criminals that run rampant is CoP Griffith.”
The petition also asks for the immediate resignation of the Police Service Commission(PolSC) head Bliss Seepersad.
Seepersad has come under fire from the Opposition regarding the entire selection process of a new CoP following the end of Griffith’s three-year contract in August.
The PolSC has been taken to court by both Griffith and the former head of the Police Social and Welfare Association acting Senior Supt Anand Ramesar.
The hearing of the application for an injunction by Griffith to have the PolSC have him return to work has been adjourned to Monday.
And mere minutes before the application was to begin virtually, member of the PolSC Courtney McNish tendered his resignation to President Paula-Mae Weekes who accepted it.
The Opposition had called for the immediate resignation of the entire PolSc board given the handling of the matter.
Ramesar is questioning why he was not selected for the interview process and filed for an injunction. The injunction will stay in place until October 24, when High Court Judge Joan Charles will decide whether to discharge or extend it pending her final determination of the case.
And in a separate claim, social activist Ravi Balgobin Maharaj also wants the court to interpret whether Griffith’s acting appointment was properly done.
His lawsuit was adjourned to next Friday.
