A Special Reserve Police (SRP) constable appeared before a Master of the High Court on Wednesday and was granted $250,000 bail for the manslaughter of another SRP.
SRP Anton Phillip, 22, was charged with the manslaughter of PC Jamal Charles, 38, who was on duty at the Guard Room, Ministry of Rural Development, Kent House, Maraval, when an explosion was heard on September 11, 2025. He appeared before Master Indira Chinebas.
The incident occurred in the company of two officers, with their firearms out of their holsters, a release by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) stated on Wednesday.
An on-duty male police officer was subsequently arrested on September 11 by officers from the Homicide Bureau of Investigations (HBI), Region One. Investigations were supervised by acting Assistant Superintendent Ramjag, acting Inspectors Seecharan, Ramsumair, and Stanislaus, along with Legal Officer PC Felix, all of HBI Region One, with support from the Forensic Science Centre and other agencies.
In a related development, PC Anton Phillip, 22, was charged with the same offence on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, when he appeared before Master Indira Chinebas. Phillip was granted bail with surety in the sum of $250,000, and the next hearing date was set for January 12, 2026.
The prosecution stated that PC Phillip was charged by Sgt Ramroop, also of HBI Region One, following legal advice received from Acting Director of Public Prosecutions Sabrina Dougdeen-Jaglal on Monday, September 15, 2025.
Phillip was granted bail on the sum of $250,000 and the matter was adjourned to January 12, 2026.
