Social Development Ministry Owes T&TEC $500,000

THE Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) is being owed close to $500,000 in arrears from the Ministry of Social Development and Family Services.

This was revealed by Social Development Minister Donna Cox on Tuesday during the Standing Finance Committee in Parliament.

Member of Parliament for Princes Town Barry Padarath questioned the minister about an increase in allocation for electricity to the value of $496,000 given that the Ministry of Finance has been pushing a conservation programme.

Cox responded, “This is a reflection of outstanding arrears.”

WASA owed too 

While payments to the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) would fall under rental agreements, the minister said, “I think there is also some arrears to be paid off.”

Some $64,000 is projected for 2022 for payments to WASA.

Is the ministry owing NIS? 

Cox was also questioned as to why there were significant increases to NIS for the various sections  to which she responded to one question, “There seems to be increases in NIS throughout and I will provide that information.”

Opposition Member David Lee had pointed out that there was significant increases for the various departments for NIS payments totaling more than $500, 000.
