SYLVANIE Romney is the nation’s newest centenarian.
Romney celebrated her milestone 100th birthday on Saturday surrounded by family and loved ones, at her home along Oropouche Road, Sangre Grande.
She was also visited by Parliamentary Secretary at the Ministry of the People, Social Development and Family Services Dr Natalie Chaitan-Maharaj.
Born in Caigual Village on July 8, 1925, Romney, affectionately known as “Syl” or “Sylvan”, grew up in a rural and industrious era. She fondly recalls her childhood days watching her parents pick and dry cocoa and coffee for sale at the Control Board. A skilled seamstress and dedicated mother, Romney built her life around family, faith, and service.

Today, she remains the proud matriarch of a loving and devoted family that includes children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, the ministry stated in a media release on Monday.
Married for 63 years to her late husband, Mark Romney, Romney says her proudest achievements are her children Marilyn, Brenda, and Arlene and especially her granddaughter, who has stood by her side throughout her life.
Romney attributed her remarkable longevity to “the Almighty and excellent care by my granddaughter.”
She encouraged the younger generation to “be respectful, respect themselves and pray.”
Her favourite saying, “God is great all the time,” remains a guiding mantra in her life. She spends her days peacefully—eating, resting, and enjoying time with loved ones.
Dr Chaitan-Maharaj expressed how “honoured and happy” she was to be part of such a meaningful occasion.
She presented the centenarian with a medal and Certificate of Achievement on behalf of the ministry and government, along with a special hamper courtesy National Flour Mills and birthday cake courtesy Kiss Baking Company.
The ministry stated it remained committed to celebrating the contributions of the elderly through the National Centenarian Programme, and will continue to support their wellbeing.
