Smith, 64, was bitten by a bull shark about ten metres from shore while bathing on Courland Bay also called Turtle Beach on Friday. He was staying at Starfish Hotel with his wife and friends and they were scheduled to leave back home to England that same day.

Reports indicated that his left arm from his elbow and left thigh were severed in the attack. His limbs as well as his fingers were reattached during surgery at the Scarborough General Hospital.

Beaches along the southwest coast of Tobago from Plymouth to Store Bay remain closed after the attack.

The Environmental Management Agency (EMA) is investigating reports of the excavation at Courland Bay that may have caused the destruction of a turtle nesting site.

Some people took to social media to suggest that the eggs and their contents may have entered the water and attracted predators.
