CONSUMERS will now benefit from the removal of Value Added Tax (VAT) from basic food items effective November 1.

This after measures announced in the 2022 Budget by Minister of Finance Colm Imbert on Monday.

On Tuesday, a release from the Supermarket Association of Trinidad and Tobago (SATT) stated that from November 1 the following items will be exempted from VAT:

  • Biscuits;
  • Cooking oil;
  • Canned vegetables;
  • Cornflakes;
  • Canned fish;
  • Canned meat;
  • Curry;
  • Juice;
  • Sausages;
  •  Ham;
  • Ketchup;
  • Bottled water; and
  • Pigtail

The association also stated that from Monday, the following items will now attract VAT:

  • Tenderloin;
  • Sirloin;
  • Frogs’ Legs;
  • Salmon;
  • Halibut;
  • Plaice;
  • Trout;
  • Seabass;
  • Lobster;
  • Crawfish;
  • Flat fish;
  • Shrimps and prawns;
  • Areca nuts;
  • Pears;
  • Quinces;
  • Apricots;
  • Sour cherries;
  • Strawberries;
  • Black, white or red currants;
  • Peaches;
  • Nectarines;
  • Kiwifruit;
  • Durians;
  • Persimmons;
  • Strawberries;
  • Raspberries;
  • Blackberries;
  • Mulberries;
  • Loganberries;
  • Gooseberries,
  • Cranberries; and
  • Blueberries

In addition, products such as corned beef, curry, sardine, smoked herring were already zero rated, as listed in Section 8 (2016), Schedule 2 of the Value Added Tax Act, SATT stated.
