SEA 2024: Fewer Students make Above 90%, Better Performances in Maths, Writing

THE Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA) results are out today (Friday, June 28,2024). 

A total of 18,177 students wrote SEA this year of which 50.21% (9,127) were male and 49.79% (9,050) were female. 

According to the Ministry of Education, this year’s results show an improvement in the general results.

The percentage of students scoring above 90% in 2024 is 1.42% versus 2.11% in 2023 and 0.47% in 2022. 

Additionally, this year, the percentage of students scoring 50% and above was 57.91% versus 58.06% in 2023 and 37.06% in 2022.  

And the percentage of students scoring 30% or below was 14.39% compared to 13.55% in 2023 and 27.81% in 2022.

The ministry stated, “The similarity of the students’ performance in 2023 and 2024 indicate steady and stable recovery from the effects of Covid-19.” 

In analysing the subject scores the Ministry of Education stated that in 2024, the mean Mathematics score was 50.7, as compared with 50.4 in 2023 and furthermore 41.9 in 2022. 

Additionally, the mean English Language Arts Writing score was 59 compared with 53.4 in 2023 and 44.3 in 2022.

For 2024, the mean English Language Arts score is 53.4 compared with 61.6 in 2023 – the only decreasing score. 

“These mean scores in 2024, when compared to 2023 and 2022, show a generally encouraging trend with regard to student performance,” the ministry stated. 

Programmes to assist in learning

In congratulating all the pupils who wrote the SEA, the ministry also reminded parents of remedial programmes in place to better assist pupils in their learning. 

The Remedial Education Programme in 80 Primary Schools of Focus was also mentioned. This programme includes initiatives such as the After School Support Education Programme (ASSEP), assignment of dedicated School Social Workers, Guidance Officers, Special Education Officers, and Learning Support Assistants. 

The ministry stated that in 50% of those schools, there has been an increase in the average weighted score of the students. Also, in 45% of those schools, there was a decline in the percentage of students scoring 30% and lower in SEA.

“This adds credence to the efforts of the Remedial Education Program of the MoE, which has been approved to continue in both primary and secondary schools of focus until 2025/26,” the release stated. 

Parents of pupils entering Form 1 in September 2024 are also reminded that the Secondary Vacation Revision Programme, which takes place at 21 centres across Trinidad, begins on July 15, 2024. 

Parents of eligible pupils were encouraged by the ministry to ensure that their children attend the classes.
