ANOTHER record breaking day for Covid-19 in Trinidad and Tobago with 11 deaths and 615 new cases.
These two figures for the number of deaths and cases are the highest reported for any given day since the pandemic began.
They were revealed by the Ministry of Health on Wednesday (Update #722).
Tuesday had another record with nine deaths, the most for a day at that time, and saw actives cases pass 4,000. Eight deaths were reported on Sunday.
The latest figures show that active case were now 4,588.
The release stated that the 615 new cases were taken from samples during the period May 7 (Friday) to May 11 (Tuesday).
It stated, “While the normal reporting timeframe covers samples taken two to three days, the substantial increase in the positive cases, and the resulting number of samples collected and processed at testing sites throughout the country, has affected the reporting timeline in this instance.”
The release added, “It should also be noted that the 99 positive cases reported on Monday 10th May, 2021 may have been as a result of the normal weekend closure of some of the testing sites and some of the health facilities where swabbing takes place.”
It noted that the positivity rate, meaning the percentage of people who are positive from samples taken, was now in excess 40%.
This is of significant concern, the Ministry of Health stated.
